My answer was:

• Use the turtle mount to build your sky- (asphalt) bridge by holding arrow-key and mouse button - semi afk. It is slower but you dont have to be careful to make a step too much and fall down
  
• In your Documents/MyGames/Terraria folder is a file called config.json. In this file you can turn on or off various things that are not in the options in game (they all have names that are self explaining).
  i recommend
  "ThickMouseEdges": true,
  "ThickMouseEdgesPackedColor": 4294967295,
  for a thick mouse cursor outline, more info in this thread.
  &
  "UseSmartCursorForCommonBlocks": true,
  for smart building mode with normal blocks
  
• For more fun while playing terraria:
  Everytime you see one or two eyes, help your brain to see a face. Your buildings and landscapes make ugly faces.
  Use the gravity globe, tab until map overlay, zoom in map with (+) until it overlaps (max zoom) and go in a cave. Happy Trip!

When i search for fitting furniture i always take a look at a picture like this

Remember that you can paint the furniture so it matches the style of your build. For help with painting take a look at this thread: "A Guide To Painting Terraria - Chapter 1: Themed Furniture" by PaintingTerraria

I would also recommend that you dont fill your build up to much until its too cramped.

If you are running out of space in your chest-room, i would recommmend building a bigger one and transfer all your things.
In case you dont know: you can alt-click to favorite things in your inventory. Favourited items cannot be quick-trashed, quick-stacked or deposited. Then you can click the 'loot all' and 'deposit all' buttons when a chest is open to quickly shift your stuff from one chest to another.
A list of things i would definitely keep (not claiming to be complete):

• Iron (lead) ore: some crafting recipes need iron
• Wood: some crafting recipes need wood
• Gold (platinum) ore: boss summoning
• All plants: potions
• Fish: potions
• Seeds: more potions and biome spreading
• 20 40 Hellfirestone bars: for the last mount you can get
• Accessoires: maybe you can combine them later
• Gems: if you want to build something shiny
• Of course you want to keep your current loadout
• Everything else
•  40 Hellstone 
• 40 Meteorite bars
• Cobweb/silk
• Pumpkins
• all lenses and vertebraes/rotten chunks

I use it with colored torches: If the (per pressure plate activated) actuated entrance wall is open, all the red lights are on, so i become alerted to close my base. If everything is closed the lighting switches to normal (in my case blue)

Red House Update: lockgate & lightswitch. King Slime came to visit. (2m43s)

I finished working on the circuits for lighting and a lock gate door, when i invited King Slime for a cup of tea. But he brought his buddies that were not invited.
They nearly broke my furniture while blobing. So i kicked them all out to show you the Red House lockgate and lightswitch by day and by night.
